waterdancer

and the light
descends upon the water
and beyond these dreams
we will remember this
and this reflection
of your shadow
says you’re with me on this road
and your pages
they’re scattered
by the rocky streams of time

leap into the mirror
into somewhere
into overthere
waterdancer
in liquid dreams
waterdancer
in liquid dreams

don’t forget
you can breathe underwater
don’t forget
you can dance to where you want to be
and the reflection
of our shadows
says I’m with you on this road
and the chapters
we are writing
by the endless streams of time

leap into the mirror
into somewhere
into overthere
watercdancer
in liquid dreams
waterdancer
in liquid dreams

seahorses

evergreen willow spies
out of the coil of sight
evergreen willow spies
eye of the stormy ride

seahorses by my side
sing me your watery lullaby
seahorses in the sky
sing me your watery lullaby

evergreen willow spies
move through the liquid night
gather yourself and hold on tight
hold on tight and take flight

seahorses by my side
sing me your watery lullaby
seahorses in the sky
sing me your watery lullaby

drawing up a storm

do you speak the language
of the sky
words unnecessary
pass us by
do you keep the secrets
of the night
dancing with delerium
by stormlight

it’s in the shadows of the waves
they’re pulling me away
it’s in this night so warm
i’m drawing up a storm

fly through onyx clouds
electric eye
over blaze of lightning
soaring high
do you dream the secrets
of the night
dancing hearts of fire
by stormlight

sing your secrets of the night
sing your secrets to me

it’s in the shadows of the waves
they’re pulling me away
it’s in this night so warm
i’m drawing up a storm

summer rain

august sky
caress my skin
misty moonlight
felt from within

warm silky night
awake at two
rolling thunder
electric blue

dream of the summer rain
dream in the summer rain

wash away
all the bad dreams
velvet whispers
lure me to your moonbeam

warm summer kisses
shake me awake
rolling thunder
lightning quake

dream of the summer rain
dream in the summer rain

sleepy roses
laced with rain
shimmer droplets
envelop me again

august sky
caress my skin
misty moonlight
felt from within

vines

aurorae lilies
their vines glow red
this shrouded sky
i'm surrounded

a million years in time
spiralling
no we cannot drown
just follow me

the light you see
their vines glow red
this shrouded sky
i'm surrounded

forest of the strange ones

they hold the key
to where we’ll be
are you ready
for what we’ll see tonight
to where we’ll be tonight

dancing moon and sun
forest of the strange ones

they once were hiding
but now they roam
with ivy swirls
in this quiet space
in this quiet earth

dancing moon and sun
forest of the strange ones

blackbird lagoon

the moon never beams
without making dreams
the swirl of this lucid sea
in the morning they arise
to greet the skies
starlight in their eyes

blackbird lagoon
we fly into
we fall into
this heart monsoon
forevermore

the moon never cries
without pulling sighs
from the force of this fervent sea
in the morning they arise
to paint the skies
paint alive this paradise

blackbird lagoon
we fly into
we fall into
this heart monsoon
forevermore

"Canadian musician and illustrator Paulina Cassidy has just released her second solo album on the beloved US label Projekt Records. DRAWING UP A STORM is a digital release of twelve beautiful tracks that go from instrumental soundscapes to more song-oriented compositions but always very atmospheric and dream-like.

It's easy to pigeonhole Cassidy's music as fairy-like and there's definitely a certain otherworldly quality to it, especially thanks to its connection with her work as a visual artist and illustrator, which always conveys a certain late-XIX century fairytale atmosphere. And yet her music is much more than that. Her use of electronic beats, synths and samples is fantastic (for example in tracks like 'Ocean Nymph' or 'Seahorses') and shows that she's paying attention to contemporary electronic music and possibly also to impossible-to-classify artists like the Finnish producer Lau Nau (whose latest album I also reviewed here) and especially fellow Canadian band Tasseomancy, with whom she definitely shares a similar approach. All this reminds us that Projekt was always a very forward-looking and experimental label, especially in the nineties (what other Darkwave label could have released a band like lovesliescrushing, for example?). So this album sits well with both contemporary Dream Pop, and with the rest of the Projekt legacy.

Apart from the aforementioned tracks, other highlights include the amazing album opener 'Waterdancer' and the title track 'Drawing Up A Storm', both of them Darkwave gems in the tradition of Black Tape For A Blue Girl, Love Is Colder Than Death, and even early Cranes. Here Cassidy's vocals manage to be earthly and ethereal at the same time, which is no mean feat. Also highly recommended are all of the instrumental tracks actually, especially 'Fireflies In Amethyst Skies'.

The album as a whole is a truly magical experience from start to finish and a fine addition to the Projekt catalogue."

"Paulina Cassidy's DRAWING UP A STORM is a quiet masterpiece, both earthly and ethereal. Through her music, lyrics and images she guides us through an alluring world that seems strange yet familiar, distant but as close as your heart. The veil of the dreamworld is near; the Eternal Feminine is calling."
